The church came into existence in 1982, following a controversy within the Presbyterian Community in the Congo. The leaders of the Eglise du Christ au Zaire made an attempt to impose an episcopal system on the Presbyterian community in Zaire. The church resisted, but Pastor Jean Bakatushipa, one of the important leaders of the church, was in favor of the proposal. He was consecrated as bishop. The General Assembly of the CPC (cf. no. 1) decided to excommunicate him. He and his followers became part of the Presbyterian Community in Eastern Kasai but then decided to set up their own group. In contrast to other divisions, this split did not cause too many ill feelings because Pastor Bakatushipa avoided any court action against his church of origin. He continues to seek reconciliation and to restore unity among Presb in the country.
