Before marrying Christian V of Denmark, Charlotte-Amelia of Hessen-Cassel had requested, and had been granted for herself and her court, the right to profess freely the Ref faith. However, the hostility of the Luth clergy was so strong that she never was crowned Queen of Denmark. The Reformed Church of Copenhagen was founded in 1685, and three years later Charlotte-Amelia personally financed the erection of the first Ref church building in Denmark. In April 1685 the King also granted special privileges to the French Huguenots, whose skill and courage were greatly appreciated. This explains why even today both French and German are spoken in this church.
The French Reformed Church consists of a single congregation of about 50 members. The French pastor of Stockholm comes once a month to preside over the service of Eucharist. This parish has 4 elders who lead worship on the other Sundays; it is a member of the CEEFE (Commission of French Evangelical Churches Abroad).
