Before marrying Christian V of Denmark, Charlotte-Amelia of Hessen-Cassel had requested, and had been granted for herself and her court, the right to profess freely the Ref faith. However, the hostility of the Luth clergy was so strong that she never was crowned Queen of Denmark. The Reformed Church of Copenhagen was founded in 1685, and three years later Charlotte-Amelia personally financed the erection of the first Ref church building in Denmark. In April 1685 the King also granted special privileges to the French Huguenots, whose skill and courage were greatly appreciated. This explains why even today both French and German are spoken in this church.
This German-speaking congregation is composed of Reformed Germans, Dutch, Hungarians, Swiss, Americans, and also some Danes, living in and around Copenhagen. It numbers some 300 members, has a pastor from Germany, and is a member of the Reformed Alliance in Germany.
