The fragmentation of Prot communities and tensions between mission bodies and local communities increasingly called for clarification. In 1962 extensive discussions took place among the various partners and led to the creation of the Evangelical Church of Chad. Basically, this denomination is the fruit of the joint efforts of the Sudan United Mission, the French Mennonites, and the Worldwide evangelization Crusade (WEC). In the strict sense of the term, it does not belong to the Ref tradition. It claims some 200,000 members, worshiping in over 1,000 different places. It runs several tribal Bible schools as well as ESTES (Ecole supérieure de théologie évangélique). COCOAM (Comité de Coordination des Activités Missionnaires), set up in January, 1991, seeks to ensure closer collaboration.
