This church is a result of evangelistic efforts of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa (cf. South Africa no. 1). In 1895 the first three congregations north of the Limpopo River in what was then Rhodesia were established (Bulawayo, Enkeldoorn, and Melsetter). The congregations whose number was soon increasing were at varying times part of NGK Synods of the Cape, of the Free State, and of Transvaal. In 1957 all congregations north of the Limpopo River became the Synod of Central Africa. In 1962 the various synods of the NGK in Southern and Central Africa united a general Synod, which meets every four years and decides on matters of policy, confession, Bible translation, training of ministers, church order, international ecumenical ties, and other matters of common concern. Subject to its participation in and loyalty to the General Synod, the Synod of Central Africa is autonomous and self-supporting.
