The church goes back to efforts of ABCFM missionaries from South Africa. Work started in 1893 in the eastern part of the country, the first stations being established at Mount Silinda and Chikore in 1895. The church became independent in 1973, and experienced considerable growth in the following years. Its successive leaders were Dr. W. M. Mkwakwami, Dr. F. J. Gomendo, and Rev. M. C. Kuchera. The church’s strength largely rests on its lay movements —Volunteers (men’s association), Ruwadzano (women’s association), and the Christian Youth Fellowship.
