Up to the end of World War I the Reformed Church of Yugoslavia was part of the Reformed Church of Hungary. In the 16th century Michael Sztáray, one of the earliest Hungarian Reformers, was active in the Baranja. When in 1920, after World War I, areas in the South of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire were given to the kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Reformed Christian Church in Yugoslavia was formed (1933). At that time it also included several German-speaking congr among farmers who had immigrated in the 18th century from the south of Germany, and also a congr in Belgrade. After World War II the German-speaking population had to leave Yugoslavia. The church suffered much hardship during the Communist regime. Its membership diminished because of emigration to Hungary and to other countries. The wars which followed the collapse of Communism at the end of the 1980s also created a new situation for the church. The congr in the territory of Croatia established themselves as a separate Reformed Christian Church in Croatia (cf. Croatia). With the massive immigration of Serbian refugees into the Vojvodina, the situation of the Hungarian-speaking minority became precarious and many decided to leave the country.
