The majority Congregational Christian Church in Western Samoa began with the arrival in 1830 of John Williams of the London Missionary Society (LMS), which stationed Islander missionaries from Tahiti and the Cook Islands in both eastern and western Samoa. Substantial institutions and village churches were established. At Malua,on the island of Upolu, Islander missionaries were trained and sent from there to work on other Pacific islands such as Tuvalu, Niué, Kiribati, and Vanuatu.
The church grew under successive periods of colonial influence: British up to about 1900, German until World War I, New Zealand administration under League of Nations, and UN mandates until independence in 1962. The CCCS developed its own constitution in stages beginning in 1928. The church was called the LMS church until 1962, when it took its present name. The CCCS remained intact until 1980, when delegates to the General Assembly from the two large eastern islands separated to form the Church of Tutuila and Manua, now called the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa (CCCAS) (cf. American Samoa). Discussions are still proceeding to seek a formula for eventual reunion.
