The Alliance of Reformed Churches began as a movement within the Christian Reformed Church in 1990. In 1991, when some of its members seceded from the Christian Reformed Church, and other independent churches expressed interest, the alliance changed its purpose and goals and took on its present name. About 20 of 32 churches are located in Canada. The alliance includes both Ref and Presb creeds as part of its basis. Some members moved toward a tighter federation and eventually formed the United Reformed Churches in 1996 (cf. no. 44). The alliance meets about once a year and continues to struggle with the challenge of its evolving organization. Its members are independent churches, concentrated in the Midwest.
In April 2001 the ARC was formally reorganized as the North American Fellowship of Reformed Churches.
