 The Evangelical Presbyterian Church was formed by 12 congregations leaving the United Presbyterian Church in the USA (the northern Presb) in 1981. This was just prior to the merger of 1983 that formed the large Presbyterian Church USA. Through aggressive evangelism and church planting, the EPC has grown rapidly to become the fourth-largest Presb body in the country. It also maintains one presbytery in Argentina. The EPC differs from other conservative Presb by its ordination of women, which it has done since its founding. Its evangelical and irenic spirit is described in its motto: “In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, charity.”
