 The Orthodox Presbyterian Church was formed in 1936 by a group leaving the Presbyterian Church USA. Led by J. Gresham Machen, a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary, a group formed a separate foreign mission society. When they refused to disband, the PCUSA suspended them. They first called themselves the Presbyterian Church in America, but had to change their name in 1938. Westminster Seminary, while always an independent school, had close ties with the OPC in the early days and has had a broad impact on conservative Presb churches, including many foreign churches. The church is active in foreign and domestic missions, with headquarters near Philadelphia. Members are found in 13 presbyteries across the USA, but the church is strongest in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California.
