Since separation of state and church in early 20th century, the Faculty does not have a doctrinal basis nor a formal confessional status anymore. Nevertheless, the theology taught in Basel is within Christian Reformed tradition. Since 2000 there is an Institute of Jewish Studies shared by the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Philosophy and History. One professor for Jewish Studies (Jewish believe) is member of the Theological Faculty.

The university also provides training for academics, research, pastoral and care and councelling.
