This Church was born out of the work of three successive European missions — the English Bapt, the Basel Mission, and the Paris Mission. In 1917, during World War I, the Basel Mission handed over 15 of its 22 stations to the Paris Mission. Since the Paris Mission was lacking in money and personnel, the Africans had a large share in the activities of the church. Preparations for the constitution of an independent church began in 1947, and in 1957 the EEC gained autonomy from the Paris Mission. Among the African leaders of the Church the following deserve to be mentioned: Modi Din, Eug?ne Mallo, and Jean Kotto. The EEC has close links with the Union des Eglises Baptistes du Cameroun (UEBC), which had also been under the supervision of the Paris Mission and became independent in the same year as the EEC. They jointly run certain church institutions. The two churches are federated in the Council of Baptist and Evangelical Churches (CEBEC).
