This church is one of the two churches in Germany with a Reformed majority. The Ref faith was introduced by the Duke of Lippe in 1605. At that time the city of Lemgo, where Martin Luther's message had already been preached in 1522, refused to accept the change. Through a peace agreement with the Duke, they were given the right to remain Luth. This arrangement has survived to this day. The Church of Lippe is a Reformed Regional Church with a Luth minority. During the Nazi period the Church of Lippe accepted into its ministry many pastors and assistants who were persecuted in other Regional Churches. About 80% of the members belong to Reformed parishes, 20% to Lutheran parishes.
