The Church of Anhalt covers the territory of the former princedom, which in 1918 became the state of Anhalt. Prince Wolfgang of Anhalt supported the Reformation in the late 1520s and in 1534 introduced new forms of worship. In 1541 the pastors officially accepted the Reformation. In 1606 the whole princedom changed from the Luth to the Ref confession. Anhalt-Zerbst returned to the Luth tradition in 1644, but ever since the two confessions have coexisted in the area of the princedom. In the 19th century the church joined the movement toward united churches. In 1865 the consistories were unified, and in 1875 a new church order introduced. The constitution of 1920 does not mention any confession, either Luth or Ref, in order to avoid reviving old controversies. The church is a member of the Evangelical Church of the Union (EKU) and the Evangelical Church in Germany.
