The beginnings of this church go back to the Reformation of both Luther and Zwingli. In the course of the conflict between Wittenberg and Zurich, the neighboring Strasbourg sought to mediate, though with little success. Since dynasties often changed in the following decades and centuries, the population was often forced to change confession. For a period the area even returned to Roman Catholicism. At the initiative of the Grand Duke of Baden the Luth and Ref congr formed a United Church in 1821. At that time about 80% were Luth and 20% Ref. After 1918 the function of the supreme bishop, which had thus far been vested in the Grand Duke, was transferred to an independent church government. The General Synod of Baden is elected directly by the members of the congr, not by the congr and districts.
