In the 16th century the Electorate (Kurfürstentum) of Brandenburg adopted the Luth Reformation. In 1613 Prince Johann Sigismund decided to follow the Ref tradition, but, despite the rules then in force, he did not succeed in changing the confessional status of the territory, even though the Hohenzollern dynasty continued to adhere to the Ref confession and actively supported the Ref minority. The number of Ref considerably increased with the arrival of Huguenots following the abolition of the Edict of Nantes (1685). Brandenburg was particularly generous in receiving refugees. Within the United Church of Berlin-Brandenburg the Ref congr are organized into two consistories — one French-Ref and the other German- Ref. Together they form the United Synod of the Evangelical-Reformed congr congr in Berlin-Brandenburg.They are also represented in the general synod of the United Church.
