In the 16th century Luth preaching and teaching predominated in the Church of Bremen. After the Synod of Dort (1618) relations were gradually established with the Netherlands. Ref patterns of church order were adopted, not in the city itself, but in the region around the city. In subsequent centuries confessional differences increasingly lost importance. The Evangelical Church of Bremen considers itself as a “free” Landeskirche; each of the 69 congr decides independently which confession and which church order it adopts. Besides Luth and united congr there are also Ref congr. The latter are a minority and are mainly located in the area of the Unterweser.
