This church is one of the youngest Landeskirchen in Germany. It was formed in 1947 through the union of three formerly independent churches Hessen-Darmstadt, Nassau, and Frankfurt. The church does not adhere to one confession of faith but leaves the decision about confessions to the individual congr. The first president of the church was Martin Niemöller, known for his leading role in the Confessing Church during the Nazi period. In the course of its existence the church went through several controversies, notably the debate about the WCC Program to Combat Racism, about the possibility of pastors belonging to the Communist party, and about the enlarging of the Airport Frankfurt am Main. The confessions referred to in the constitution include the Barmen Declaration.
