 At the time of the Reformation the Landgrave of Kurhessen also took responsibility for church affairs. In 1529 Prince Philip sought to unify the opposing streams of the Reformation by arranging for conversations on the understanding of the Lord’s Supper in Marburg. In the 17th and 18th centuries many Huguenots found refuge in Kurhessen, and in the 19th century the ground was laid for the coexistence of the Luth and Ref confessions in a united church. The close relations with the state ended after World War I; the church was given the freedom to constitute itself independently from the state. In 1924 the constitution for the Evangelical Landeskirche Hessen-Cassel was adopted. Ten years later the area of Waldeck was joined to the territory of the Landeskirche. From a confessional point of view the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck is a united church.
