In 1815 the Eastern Oberlausitz became part of Silesia. The Evangelical Church of this area was the Evangelical Church in the Province of Silesia. Before World War II the Church of Silesia had more than two million members in 700 congr served by 900 pastors. In 1951 the western districts of the church, i.e.,west of the Neisse border, were reconstituted as the Evangelical Church of Silesia. In 1968 the name of the church was changed to Evangelical Church of the Area of Görlitz. The present name was adopted in 1992. The church’s background is primarily Lutheran, but the church is a member of the Evangelical Church of the Union. There is one Ref congregation in Görlitz.
