The Reformation was introduced in Pomerania at an early date. Under the leadership of Johannes Bugenhagen, called Doctor Pomeranus, the area adopted the Reformation in 1534. Thirty years later Jakob Runge published a collection of Confessions for use in the church. The territory of Pomerania often changed its rulers. After the peace of Westphalia (1648) the eastern part of Pomerania was consigned to Brandenburg. The whole area became part of Prussia in 1815. The plans of union introduced in 1817 by the Prussian kings initially met with much resistance but finally were generally accepted. The end of World War II brought farreaching changes. The eastern part of Pomerania became part of Poland. The center of the church moved from Stettin to Greifswald. The numerical strength of the church diminished. While it had 1,761,000 members in 1932, today it has only 143,000. To a large extent this is due to secularization.
