This church came into existence in 1817 when the Prussian King Frederick-William III called for the union of the congr of Luth and Ref background. Despite forming one church, the individual congr retain their own confession of faith. In its structure the church follows the Ref tradition. In the struggle with the Nazi regime the Ref congregations of the Rhineland gave the signal for resistance by calling the Barmen synod in 1934. The Barmen Declaration continues to play a significant role in most united churches of Germany. The first free synod after the Nazi regime was held in 1948. The Ref congr are mainly situated in the following regions: Niederrhein, Bergisches Land (area of Wuppertal), Mittelrhein, Hunsrück, and the Hessian part of the church.
