The province of Sachsen is the part of Sachsen which was attributed to Prussia by the Congress of Vienna (1815). It covers the area of Sachsen-Anhalt, Altmark, the eastern part of the Harz, the industrial centers of Halle, Leuna, and Bitterfeld, and the city of Wittenberg. The churches in this area were integrated into the Prussian union between Luth and Ref. Despite the union which was introduced in 1817, the Ref congr maintained their identity and form a special unit within the United church. It includes the following congr: Aschersieben, Burg, Calbe, Halberstadt, Halle/Saale, Magdeburg, Stendal, and Wettin. At the initiative of the Prussian kings, a special chair for Ref theology was established at the University of Halle.
