The Congregational Fellowship was founded in the far north by Pastor Barzillai Quaife in 1840. Forty years later there were still only 12 ministers in the whole country. The first Congregational Union was held in 1887. In 1893 women were admitted to the Assembly as full members, and a few years later a woman became president of the Assembly. In 1920 the Congregational Union approached the Presbyterian Church with a view to church union, but it later withdrew “until the Meth could join in.” In 1947 the Assembly accepted responsibility for Samoan, Cook Island, and Niuean Christians in New Zealand (former London Missionary Society Churches). But in 1963 The Pacific Island Congregational Church (PICC) split over matters of language and culture to form a Samoan Church. The majority of the remaining PICC joined the Presbyterian Church (cf. no. 1).
