This church owes its existence to missionary efforts of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church (cf. United States). After an initial presence at the end of the 19th century, missionary work was launched in 1908 in the province of Canton by a Chinese, Rev. Gam Sing-Quah, who had been converted to Christianity in the United States. By 1949 there were 13 congr with about 1,500 members. In 1952, after the takeover of the Communist regime, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church concentrated its efforts on Hong Kong. In 1980 the seven congr —six in Hong Kong and one in Macao —were organized as a presby. In 1989 the church made a statement in support of the democratic movement in China.
