Prot Christianity came to Swatow through the Basel Mission. The Basel missionary Lechler worked there from 1848 to 1852. After his expulsion English Presb missionaries arrived there in 1856. The LMS continued the work of this Presb Church. The first Swatow church was founded in Hong Kong in 1909 by Swatow traders who had settled there.
