The Presbyterian Community in the Congo, formerly CPZa, is numerically the most important Ref community in the Congo. It counts more than a million members. It grew out of the work of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission (APCM), which started in 1891. This was one of the three biggest mission agencies working in the Belgian Congo. It carried out an impressive work in the Kasai, through a large number of institutions (schools, hospitals, etc.). From the beginning the mission cooperated with other denominations. It has close links with the CPK (cf. no. 5) and the CPSHA (cf. no. 11). The APCM reacted at an early date against the repressive policy of the colonial administration. The heritage of protest against the violation of human rights marks the church to this day. The CPC suffered from controversies and schisms in the decade from 1960 to 1970. The conflicts, magnified by interethnic tensions, led to the foundation of three separate denominations: the Presbyterian Community of Eastern Kasai (cf. no. 2), the Presbyterian Community of Western Kasai (cf. no. 4), and the Reformed Community of Presb (cf. no. 3). Soon the separate groups began to feel the need for collaboration. Thus the split led to the foundation of the COREZA, now ARCK.
