The CPK was founded in 1955 by the Presbyterian Mission in Leopoldville, which was a branch of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission (APCM). It considered the evangelization of the urban population to be its principal vocation. Since many Presb, especially educated people, migrated to the capital, pastoral care needed to be provided. The church developed in close touch with the Presb community in the Kasai and other communities in the neighborhood of Kinshasa. The CPK was deeply involved in the unification of the Prot churches within the framework of the ECC. The lay members of the church were particularly dynamic and played a significant role in society; they gave the church a degree of visibility beyond its numerical strength. After independence the church was shaken by tensions and divisions. More than 1,500 members separated in 1964 to form a Pentecostal community. Step by step the community regained its stability, largely due to the leadership of the Rev. Josué Tshimungu. Though the CPK was a catalyst in the formation of the ECC, it now criticizes its clericalism and authoritarian style of leadership. It also speaks out on issues such as the democratization of the country and human rights. Working together with an important Baptist community in the same region, the CPK represents in the eyes of the public a progressive force. It has been a member of WARC since 1982 and provides the secretariat for the ARCK.
