The church owes its existence to the Disciples of Christ Congo Mission (DCCM) and has its roots in the Equator region. Missionary efforts began in 1897. American Bapt having done the groundwork, the DCCM found open doors. Certain DCCM missionaries courageously denounced the inhuman practices of the colonial régime. The DCCM promoted the cooperation of Prot missions, and had a leading role in education and health services. It worked together with Presb missionaries in the Kasai in the field of theological education. The mission agency in the USA encouraged the autonomy of the church and continued to support the new African leaders. The Disciples of Christ in the Congo became one of the important denominations, and its leaders were prominent in the creation and the life of the ECC. Rivalries between Disciples leaders and the negative role played by Mgr. Bokoleale as president of the ECC have damaged the reputation of the church among Prot of the Congo. The church does not belong to WARC. Though a founding member of COREZA, it suspended its participation in 1992.
