The church came into being through the missionary action of the Svenska Missionsförbundet (SMF, cf. Sweden), which started in 1881. Choosing as their center the Lower-Congo, where British and American Baptists were already at work, the SMF contributed to the Prot presence in this region especially through the interdenominational center of Kimpese. SMF shared with the Bapt the practice of believer’s baptism. One of the SMF missionaries became General Secretary of the CPC. The indigenous community resulting from the Swedish mission was strongly marked by a revival movement of Pentecostal inspiration. After inde-pendence, the church, now called the Evangelical Church of Manyanga-Matadi, pursued the task of evangelization. Together with two Baptist groups, it founded the Theological School in Kinshasa. It was active in creating the ECC. Through the participation of several of its leaders in the work of the WCC the church became more conscious of its Ref heritage. The CEC is a founding member of the COREZA (ARCK). It has recently developed programs of political education in rural areas. The Swedish government supports some church projects.
