The church grew out of missionary efforts of the Evangelical Free Church of America, a small denomination of Swedish origin, closely related but distinct from the Evangelical Covenant Church of America (cf. Evangelical Community of Christ in Ubangi-Mongala, above). After exploratory journeys by T. M. Johnson, the mission settled in 1923 in the northwest of the then Belgian Congo. It was first called the Swedish American Mission and later renamed the Evangelical Mission in Ubangi. Like its sister church, the Evangelical Community of Christ in Ubangi-Mongala (cf. no. 8), the CECU is implanted in the region whose population had the same ethnic background as late President Mobutu; it is therefore somewhat suspect in the eyes of those from other parts of the country. The church belongs to the Eglise du Christ au Congo (ECC), but it is not a member of WARC or ARCK.
