The first congregation of this church was founded in 1843 by European immigrants. At the end of the last century another congregation was founded in Entre Rios with Russian-German immigrants and a third with Swiss immigrants. In 1899 the Evangelical German Synod of the River Plate was founded. In 1965 the church established itself as the Evangelical Church of the River Plate with full self-government.Since the end of the 1970s the church has sought to go beyond being an ethnic church serving exclusively the descendants of German and Swiss immigrants and to become more and more a national church. The church has expanded into the neighboring countries of Uruguay and Paraguay.
