The first Presb church (St. Andrew’s Kirk) was built in 1833 by Scottish plantation owners. The church was associated with the Church of Scotland. Its first minister was William Haig, who was ordained in British Guyana. Government grants which the church received in its early years were withdrawn in 1860. After the abolition of slavery and with the advent of East Indians as indentured workers in 1880, mission work was established in various parts of the island, especially in Belair (St. Andrew’s) and Samaritans (St. Patrick’s). The missionaries who served at these stations were drawn from the Canadian mission in Trinidad. Schools were opened in Belair and Samaritan. In 1945 the Church of Scotland withdrew its support for the mission work both in Grenada and in St. Vincent. The suggestion was made that the church unite with the Methodists. Resisting the proposal, the church associated itself with the Presb Church of Trinidad. Through the resources and assets of a large East Indian population, this church had grown considerably (cf. Trinidad). It had the support of the United Church of Canada. The congr in Grenada became part of the Northern Presbytery of the Church of Trinidad. In the 1980s the will for autonomy became stronger in Grenada, and on April 20, 1986, the Presbyterian Church in Grenada was founded.
