The history of this church is closely connected with the history of the Christian Reformed Church in the Dominican Republic (cf. no. 2). In the 1980s a missionary of the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA) brought two pastors of the Christian Reformed Church in the Dominican Republic, Obelto Cheribinand Emilio Martinez, to Haiti to start theological education on an extension basis in the evangelical community. They were joined by several Haitian nationals in forming the John Calvin Institute in Port-au-Prince.They also founded a Christian Ref congr. In 1991 a major repatriation of Haitians (70,000) from the Dominican Republic took place, among them one-fifth of the Haitian membership of the Christian Reformed Church; they settled in the mountains of Thiotte and Jacmel, on the central plateau, and in the slums of Port-au-Prince.The decision to establish the Christian Reformed Church in Haiti was taken in 1993 at a joint meeting of Haitian and Dominican church leaders, with participation of CRC missionaries from the United States.
