This group of 12 congregations in four presbyteries in the USA and Canada rejects all state incorporation and excludes any churches chartered by civil authorities. When the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod, joined the Presbyterian Church in America in 1983, a group that decided not to go along with the union called themselves the Covenant Presbytery. By 1985 this presbytery had grown to four presbyteries and become the Reformed Presbyterian Church in the United States. In 1990 it changed its name to the RPC in the Americas. Within a year,the four presbyteries of this church were in conflict. One presbytery dissolved,another stood alone as the Hanover Presbytery. In 1991 the remainder reorganized as the RPC (General Assembly).
