The Reformed Presb originated in Scotland during the Reformation as the Covenanters, who signed “covenants” in resistance to the king. The first Ref presbytery dates to 1752. They merged with the Associate Presbytery in 1782 (cf. no. 3), but a small group reemerged in 1798. After the 1833 split between Old Light and New Light schools, the New Light branch eventually merged first with Bible Presb in 1965 and then with the Presbyterian Church of America in 1982. The Ref Presb today are the continuation of the Old Light School, incorporating a merger with the Associate Presb Church of North America in 1969. The Old Light church was marked by its refusal to permit members to vote or participate in public affairs. The restriction was removed in 1964. Today the Ref Presb place special emphasis on the inerrancy of Scripture and the Lordship of Christ in every area of life. They sing no hymns and use no instruments in their worshipservices. They are Presb in government, but they hold no general assemblies. Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA, is affiliated with the church. Its membership is concentrated in western Pennsylvania and eastern Kansas.
