American Samoa, which had been a naval dependency of the USA since 1900, changed in 1950 to become an American dependent civil territory. The way opened for gradual emergence of the American Samoan church from within the Congregational Christian Church (cf. Western Samoa, no. 1). The latter had always previously spanned both American and soon-to-become-independent Western Samoa.
From 1945 onward the ABCFM (which became the United Church Board of World Ministries after the merger in 1950 of the Congregational Christian and Evangelical and Reformed Churches in the USA) helped and supported the churches in American Samoa.
In 1980 the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa was formally established. Theology and church government were unchanged. The CCCAS remains in dialogue with the larger Congregational Church in Western Samoa about the possibilitiy of an eventual reunion.
