The church was organized in 1859. Its founder was Rev. Ashbel Green Simonton, of the United States. Another pioneer was the Rev. John Rockwell Smith. Simonton arrived in the city of Rio de Janeiro on August 12, 1859, with the objective of evangelizing Brazilians. The work bore fruit and has obviously been consolidated over a period of more than 130 years of activity, evangelism, and mission. In the course of its history the church has undergone several schisms. The most recent split resulted in the organization of the United Presbyterian Church of Brazil.
