The church has two roots. In 1968, groups of Presb, members of the IPB (cf. no. 1), who were influenced by the Pentecostal movement, left their church and founded the Christian Presbyterian Church (Igreja Crist? Presbiteriana). A similar process took place in the Independent Presbyterian Church (IPIB). In response to the Pentecostal movement, groups of Presb left their church and founded in 1972 the Independent Renewed Presbyterian Church (Igreja Presbiteriana Independente Renovada). On January 8, 1975, the two groups became one and the Renewed Presbyterian Church of Brazil was officially constituted. Its work has spread all over Brazil, but its greatest strength is in the states of ParanŠ (16,334 members) and S?o Paulo (15,427 members). Some of the local churches have given special attention to social work. The church has a missionary institution (Miss?o Priscila e Aquila) that gives support to 27 missionaries in Brazil and 8 abroad. It is also active in the Amazon region. It has a ship which sails in the south of the state of ParanŠin the north of Brazil and gives assistance to communities that live along the riverbanks. Two theological schools are available for the formation of pastors. The church also runs a publishing house.
