Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Bahia
Apto 402-A
Rua Ubarana 330
91910-070 Salvador
BA
Brazil (South America)
Address-No.: 1286 / 2332
This community started in March 1960 when a Japanese Presbyterian, Mitsuo Sasaki, settled in the interior of Bahia state with his family. They held Bible studies. When the community began to grow, the Cumberland Presbyterian of Koza in Japan (cf. Japan no. 5) decided in 1982 to send a pastor with the special mandate to ordain Mitsuo Sasaki as presbyter. The church in Brazil belongs to the twelfth region of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Koza. In the period from 1986 to 1994, pastors were sent to assist the community in Brazil. Elder Mitsuo Sasaki continues to be the spiritual leader of the church. The members of the community are mainly farmers. Thirty percent of the community live in the city of Salvador, 75 km away, but participate regularly in the services held in Japanese.
