This church is a former constituent of the Church of North India (CNI). Claiming that CNI is too centralized and that its bishops have not demonstrated much care about rural churches, they decided in 1994 to secede from the CNI and to revive the United Church of Northern India (UCNI) to which it belonged in the past and through which it became part of the CNI in 1970. At a synod in Etah in 1994 the decision was taken “to withdraw union from the Agra and Lucknow diocese of the CNI.” Currently the North India Synod is a registered society of the United Church of Northern India, having four church councils, namely Allahabad, Farrukhabad, Mainpuri, and Bundelkhanad (in process of formation). As a consequence of the withdrawal legal cases are before court. The main emphasis of the church is on the life of rural communities.
