The origins of this group are in the North. During the Japanese rule and struggle against shrine worship, five churches in HamKyungNamDo province separated from the HamNam presby and kept their faith in the spirit of martyrdom (Dukchun, East Dukchun, Kigock, Sangsuri, and JangHung). Their leader was Pastor Lee Gye-Sil. After liberation they went their own way. During the Korean War Pastor Lee, with hundreds of church members, fled to the South; they were rescued from HungNam by the US Army. They built a church and a seminary on GuJae Island (1953). In the same year they united with JaeGun (no. 6), which held similar views and had also moved to the South. Both introduced the system of a general meeting for the formation of a presby. The union was soon dissolved, but six congr of JaeGun (no. 6) stayed with SunJang. They founded the Dukchun Church and an independent seminary (1956) in YoungDeungPo in Seoul. Pastor Lee Gye-Sil became the first president of the independent presby. The church grew and developed international relations; it participated in the 10th ICCC Assembly with observer status. In 1979 the church adopted the name SungJang. The church is active in missions abroad.
