The Church of Christ (Isua Krista) has its roots among the tribes of the Lais in the Chhimtuipui District, Mizoram. The origins of the church are closely related to the history of the churches of Mizoram (cf. no. 3) and Maraland (cf. no. 4). The Lais were evangelized by two missionary agencies — the Baptist Mission and the Lakher Pioneer Mission. In 1958 a Lai elder, Mr. F. Hniarkunga, started a movement for an independent Church of the Lais in India. In 1964, a meeting of delegates representing both missions agreed to the project. After protracted negotiations the church was inaugurated on May 23, 1970. Headquarters were established in Balpui (NG). For some time the new church was not recognized by the neighboring churches, and it was prevented from joining the North East Indian Council of Churches. Eventually the obstacles were overcome; the church is now a member of the Council. Faithful to its Bapt origins, the church practices believer’s baptism. The worship services are conducted by the church elders, who are elected by the local church community once every month. Challenges to the church include mission to Myanmar and Bangladesh.
