The aim of the seminary founded in 1970 by Lee Won-Hwang was to give a chance to candidates for the ministry who felt they had a calling but could not succeed in their studies. The undertaking turned into a scandal: the seminary produced too many unqualified candidates. A controversy arose. Pastor Baek Kee-Wan and Pastor Chung Yun-Song called an assembly. In order to redress the situation and to restore the good name of the denomination, the name was changed from JangShin to JungAng (1976). In 1979 the church revised its constitution and introduced women’s ordination. Since 1980 JungAng has grown rapidly. The first woman was ordained in 1983. In order to avoid friction with opponents of women’s ordination, women pastors and women evangelists formed a separate presby. Soon this presby separated from JungAng and formed a distinct denomination (cf. no. 44). Baek Kee-Wan seceded from JungAng (see under no. 42) and formed a separate denomination. The remaining body changed its name to HapDongJungAng.
