In 1833 the Board of Foreign Missions, set up by the PCUSA, started work in Liberia. The policy of sending only black missionaries from the USA was abandoned when it became clear that they were not less subject to malaria than the white missionaries. One of them signed the Monrovian Declaration of Independence (1847). The last missionaries arrived in 1887. The Presbytery of Liberia in West Africa became independent in 1928. In 1944 it started its own mission work in the Todee District and opened a school and a clinic. Women have traditionally played an important role in church life and have been ordained at an early stage to the various ministries. In 1980 the Presbytery of Liberia became a provisional Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of the USA.
