This church was founded in 1933 under the leadership of a former minister of the Northern Synod (Livingstonia), Rev. Yesaya Zerenje Mwase. Some of the reasons for the split were: delays by the missionaries to integrate Africans fully into the life and work of the mission church; and strict discipline in the mission church, which led to delays in the admittance of new members.
