In 1948 the Advent began to evangelize the Kudat peninsula in North Borneo. At that time the indigenous people in this area began to realize that their religious taboos represented a hindrance to economic progress. Some became Advent; others were hesitant to replace old taboos with new ones (no pork, no alcohol, etc.). Soon representatives of the Rungus people, a tribe of poor rice farmers in the north of Sabah, approached the Basel mission in Kudat and asked for missionaries. Two years later Heinrich Honegger of the Basel Mission began work among them. He found open doors. Evangelistic work went hand in hand with educational efforts. Since the economic situation of the Rungus was precarious, an agricultural school on Tinangol was opened. In 1965 a Bible School was established. By 1965 the church became independent. In the years from 1969 to 1976 the church came under heavy pressure due to an Islamicization campaign of the Sabah government. All European personnel had to leave the country. In recent years the church has grown rapidly and has also reached other tribes. There is also a congr in West Malaysia for the many migrant workers from Sabah. As far as structure is concerned, the church is similar to the BCCM (cf. no. 2). It entertains close relations with the BCCM, especially in the field of theological education. Despite its Presbyterian structure the church also became a member of the LWF in 1995.
