In 1875 the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in the USA (cf. United States) began to send missionaries to Mexico for the distribution of Bibles. On June 29, 1878, a small presbytery was formed in Tampico. For many years Rev. Neill E. Prestly and his wife Rachel worked at Tampico. Due to illness Prestly had to abandon the work in 1917. Under the leadership of the Mexican pastor Pedro Trujillo, the presbytery of Tampico became independent. In 1891 a group of women missionaries opened the Instituto Juárez — named after President Benito Juárez. The church has worked in the northeastern part of the country, mainly in the states of Tamaulipas, Northern Veracruz, and San Luis. Recently congregations have been established in the capital and in Guadalajara (state of Jalisco)
