The history of this group goes back to the 19th century. In the ’50s and the ’60s a Congreg missionary, Melinda Rankin, founded several communities which she later directed to join the Presbyterian mission. Some of these communities maintained their independence, however. Other congregations were founded by missionary efforts of the Congreg Board of Mission in Boston, USA. David Watkins and his wife started a community in Guadalajara in 1872. A year later Juan L. Stephens, who had founded a community in Ahualulco, was assassinated by fanatic people. Similar violence took place in Santa Maria del Oo, Tecolotlán, Atengo. The work expanded to Chihuahua (1896) and to other places.
